Call to Worship

Psalm 107:1-9:

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His love endures forever!

Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story. Those he redeemed from the hand of the foe. Those he gathered from farthest lands of the earth.

Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding nowhere to settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.

Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them to a safe place.

Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.

Prayer

Holy Father,

We thank You and praise You for so freely and graciously inviting us into fellowship with You through Your Son Jesus Christ.

We are altogether unworthy of such an invitation.  We confess that our hearts prone to wander away from the pursuit of our great heavenly Treasure, and toward the pursuit of worldly gain.

Forgive us, Lord, and revive our hearts.  Help us to cherish Jesus far above all other things so that You might be glorified in us and we might be satisfied in You.

Amen.

 

New City Catechism

Question 11

What does God require in the sixth, seventh, and eighth commandments?

Sixth, that we do not hurt, or hate, or be hostile to our neighbor, but be patient and peaceful, pursuing even our enemies with love. Seventh, that we abstain from sexual immorality and live purely and faithfully, whether in marriage or in single life, avoiding all impure actions, looks, words, thoughts, or desires, and whatever might lead to them. Eighth, that we do not take without permission that which belongs to someone else, nor withhold any good from someone we might benefit.

15 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” 16 But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. 17 And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ 20 And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”
