This Sunday, we will be looking at the minor prophet Amos.

Amos begins his prophetic ministry by describing in great detail the terrible judgment from God that is going to come against the sin of all of Israel’s enemies. All the nations and people groups situated around them, who had opposed them, and made their life difficult for generations – they were all going to be destroyed and devoured.

And, presumably, all of Amos’ listeners were thrilled at this news. Thank goodness that all of the bad people out there were finally going to get what they deserve!

However, as Amos continues on, he turns, and points the finger squarely at the people of Israel. He declares that they, too, are guilty of sin. And that God’s judgment is coming against them, if they don’t repent.

We will consider together how the gospel is not just for “other” people. For “bad” people. For “those” people. Rather, the gospel is for us. Repentance is for us. We need God’s grace as much (and even more) than anyone else.
