This Sunday, we continue our journey through the gospel of Luke, and come to an enigmatic little text in Luke 8:19-21. It’s short enough that we can read it in its entirety here:

Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

It appears, at first glance, that Jesus’s family is lovingly approaching Him, and that He is rudely dismissing them. We’ll take our time, and work through these verses, and see what is really happening. We’ll look at Jesus’s heart for His biological family that is in view here. As well as for the spiritual family that He is creating through His death and resurrection.
