How did John the Baptist see and understand the person of Jesus?  (1:15, 23, 26-27)

How did John the Baptist see and understand himself?  (1:19-23)  Who is he careful to clarify that he is not?  What does he understand his mission to be?  (Isaiah 40:1-5)
