Describe the difference between the world’s definition of greatness and Jesus’ definition of greatness.

What does the disciples’ argument (in Luke 9:46) reveal about their hearts?  (Especially in proximity to Jesus’ words in Luke 9:21, 9:23-27, 9:44.)  Why do you think that the disciples have such a different perspective than Jesus does?

Where in your life do you find yourself striving and longing for worldly greatness?  What would it look like to repent, and to pursue godly greatness instead?

In Luke 9:48, Jesus defines true greatness in terms of humility, and loving your neighbor.  (Particularly those who are powerless, and vulnerable, and needy.)  How can we (as individuals, and corporately as a church) work to demonstrate care and concern for people like this?

What are we to make of John’s response in Luke 9:49?  What does it tell us about his heart?  What does Jesus’ response in Luke 9:50 tell us about the heart of God?

How are we to reconcile Jesus’ words in Luke 9:50 with his words in Luke 11:23?  How are we to interpret and apply both verses, in light of one another?
